What is Youth Court?
  • A voluntary alternative to the Adult Court system for tobacco and alcohol juvenile offenders. To qualify a youth must admit guilt, and be a first time offender between the ages of 10 and 17.
  • The primary goal is early intervention in first time criminal or delinquent charges to deter further (future) offenses.
  • A secondary goal is to educate teens in the Meridian, Boise, and private schools about the law by having them participate "hands on" in the actual court process.

Stress is placed upon having all the participants receive a positive learning experience regarding the juvenile justice system in Idaho.

Youth Court Works
Ada County Youth Court has been in existence for over 13 years and has processed over 3,500 cases. This means that a
                     large number of Youth
                     have learned from the
                     experience, on both sides
                     of the fence.

Every Thursday evening, as many as 30 High School and Junior High students are provided with the opportunity to participate in hearing and deciding 8 - 10 actual cases involving juvenile offenses.

Provides an opportunity for volunteers to be part of the solution for teen substance abuse issues.

Allows for the taxpayers to be relieved of the payment for Court proceedings that would otherwise have to be heard in Adult Court.

Provides an opportunity for the defendant to receive a powerful - but positive - message about why it is important that they respect the laws of their country.

Provides an opportunity for the defendant to earn the right to have the charges dismissed (not expunged) off their record unless a 2nd offense occurs within one calendar year.

Provides an alternative with a positive approach.
